$13 million accommodation village planned for Peculiar Knob mine
One of Australia's largest off-site construction companies, Ausco Modular, has secured the contract to supply accommodation for WPG Resources' $140 million mining project in central South Australia.
Ausco Modular will design, build, deliver and install a state-of-the-art accommodation village for more than 248 workers.
Over 100 buildings will be transported from Adelaide to the Peculiar Knob iron ore mine, 67 kilometres southeast of Coober Pedy.
Ausco Modular's regional manager Rob Wormald said the keys to the fully outfitted village will be handed over in October.
"This village will set an industry benchmark in mining site accommodation, going above and beyond to make it a real home away from home for the workers on this project," Mr Wormald said.
"It will have administration offices, kitchen and dining facilities, recreation buildings, plus a barbeque area, swimming pool and gym. Each bedroom will feature an ensuite bathroom, flat-screen television, split-system air-conditioning and fridge," he said.
Mr Wormald said Ausco Modular's flexibility was crucial to winning this project.
"We've worked closely with the WPG Resources team to come up with the best solution that delivers maximum functionality without comprising on worker comfort.
"We'll provide a completely tailored solution, taking care of everything from construction to interior fit-out, including supplying all furniture and electrical goods. The layout of the village has also been altered so existing trees and shrubs could be kept intact," Mr Wormald said.
WPG Resources has also agreed to hire a temporary village from Ausco Modular while the other is built.
"There's still more than 50 people needing on-site accommodation before the permanent village is complete. Our hire buildings will be an ideal solution for bridging that gap," Mr Wormald said.
